“A Significant Milestone”:
The SE Institute Board Approves a New Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
|

|
|
At its January 22 monthly business meeting, the Somatic Experiencing Institute Board of Directors approved a final draft of a new organizational Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, with an implementation date of April 15, 2021. The action follows a 60-day review and comment period provided to the SE community to offer feedback on the proposed documents. The review period ended on December 14, 2020.
The ethics and standards provisions will be accompanied by a Grievance Policy, proscribing the establishment and authority of an independent Ethics Committee and how grievances may be filed in alignment with the SE Institute Code of Ethics. An amended Whistleblower policy was also approved by the Board and will be made available for community access. The search for members of the Ethics Committee will begin later this month.
“This is a significant milestone in the history of our organization,” says Rebecca Stahl, chair of the SE Institute Board. “It has been a work in progress for several years by volunteers in our community who are devoted to enhancing the quality and professionalism of the Institute. We give our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to those who worked diligently and persistently to achieve this major effort.”
In other action taken by the Board last month, the Institute’s 2021 organizational budget was approved, forecasting revenues of $6.5 million and expenses of $6.36 million, with a $140,000 return to reserves used to stabilize the organization during the pandemic.

Resigns from Institute Board
We are saddened to announce the departure of one of our board members, Sabia Wade. Sabia joined the SE Institute Board of Directors in July 2020 and has resigned to focus more exclusively on her growing and thriving businesses. We send her our heartfelt gratitude for her dedication and commitment to the Institute. Please join us in congratulating Sabia for her business success, thanking her for her commitment to SE Institute, and wishing her the best in her continued endeavors.
The Board of Directors will be looking to fill the remainder of Sabia’s term immediately.

For the first time ever, SE Institute will be convening a virtual international conference, on June 11-13, 2021, to celebrate the evolution and current applications of Somatic Experiencing™. This international conference is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the many innovative and unique ways SE is being used.
We highly encourage you to apply to present at this conference. There are multiple ways in which you can participate, as described in the Call for Applications, linked below. We also strongly encourage applications highlighting research on SE that demonstrates scientific evidence and that helps us better understand how and for whom SE is effective. This virtual conference will be an important precursor to our anticipated in-person conference in 2022 to celebrate the life and works of Dr. Peter Levine.

In Honor Of
Black History Month
|
|
|
|
Meet Mamie Phipps Clark and Kenneth Clark, the first African Americans to obtain their doctoral degrees in psychology from Columbia University. The Clarks established the first full-time child guidance center offering psychological and casework services to families in the Harlem area of New York. They were also influential to the Civil Rights movement, including serving as expert witnesses in the landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education, in 1954.
The Clarks are featured psychologists of the Ethnicity and Health in America Series through the American Psychological Association, raising public awareness about health concerns among people of color and encouraging psychologists to take a leading role in combating disparities in health.
